WHAT YOU’LL BE ABLE TO DO

Describe a symptom, choose a useful test, and verify a focused change.

01

Describe what actually failed

“The internet is broken” leaves too many possibilities. Record the task, affected device, exact result, and whether other users see the same thing.

One laptop resolves the site name, but the expected server returns HTTP 403.
02

Choose a discriminating test

Ask what each possible result would tell you before running a test. A failed ping alone cannot establish that a web application is down: ICMP may be filtered while other traffic is allowed.

Compare the affected request with a known-working request. What is different?
03

Change, verify, record

Make a focused change supported by the evidence. Repeat the original failing task, check for side effects, and record the outcome. A change without a retest is still an unverified hypothesis.

Symptom → evidence → hypothesis → change → retest
PUT THE IDEA TO WORK

Check your reasoning.

The expected server returns HTTP 403. Where is the evidence pointing first?

FROM EXPLANATION TO EXPLORATION

Now change something.

Pick a fault scenario. Write down your first hypothesis, then compare it with the lab’s evidence.
