From 192.168.10.20/24, which destination normally needs the default gateway?
03Practise+
Local or remote?
04Explain+
The 192.168.20.80 destination is outside the local 192.168.10.0/24 network. The default gateway provides a route onward.

A closer look inside.
Digital learning. Something you can actually try.
- 01
Meet your local network.
A host at 192.168.10.20/24 is on network 192.168.10.0. The /24 prefix means the first 24 address bits identify the network.
- 02
Compare the destination.
192.168.10.80 shares the same /24 network. The host can resolve its local link address and deliver locally. 192.168.20.80 is on a different network.
- 03
Let the gateway help.
For a remote destination, the host normally sends the frame to its default gateway. The packet keeps the remote destination IP while the local Ethernet header names the gateway.
Local or remote?
One address and one subnet mask decide the first step.
